With your first step you will burn Can’t control the hate you have learned Killing slow is the way I conquer Until you know the meaning of suffer For a supposed day of rest, Leo's Sunday had been anything but that. Unsure if it was pure coincidence or just plain bad luck, the day had been filled with continuous pirate incursions and attacks on Union Colony Cluster. It came as no particular surprise to anyone that the Union military units, and their hired guns that were garrisoned there, that it was starting to become a continuous battle of attrition. The merc's own PMC unit had already sortied at least six times on this day alone, and while the compensation, especially the salvage, were good, it was still wearing out the unit's battle endurance. The unit's entire complement of Unitas, having returned from their earlier sorties, were in various stages of repair, rearming and maintenance. Which meant there were no combat ready machines ready for deployment at most, including his own custom Unitas. Having spent most of the day in the command center coordinating the action between the squads, the brawny male was relieved for the unexpected down time. He needed a good hot meal for once, having subsisted on MREs in the meantime, and a good long hot soak to get rid of the weariness in his body. And that Leo attempted to do, after the night shift crew came on. Retiring to his room, Leo actually flopped onto his bunk bed still fully clothed, with his face sinking into the pillow and groaning in relief at the comfort. Truth be told, he was quite tempted to remain there for the next several days. But judging from the day's trend, it would be a luxury in itself to get a full eight hours of sleep. Just as he was about to drop off into slumber, his communicator beeped incessantly, rousing Leo from his drowsy state. Growling in annoyance at the interruption, the muscled male gripped the device in his hand “ What...?!”, Leo asked in irritation, his muscles bunching up under the short sleeved compression shirt he had been wearing for most of the day. “ Boss, sensors are picking up a rapidly approaching enemy battle group. Estimated enemy count, eighteen units. No Union military, nor our own people are in the immediate area who can respond in time.”, reported the sensor technician. “ ...Fine, but prep my Unitas for launch, regardless of current condition...And keep rousing the Union guys for their assistance also...eighteen is a bit too much even for one person to handle. If I survive this, I'm renegotiating our contract...” “ Er, actually Boss, there's something new which came for you just now, and it's ready and waiting in the hangar. You were supposed to be informed about it when you came back on shift. But now is a good a time as any to inform you about it. “ Whatever...prep that for a quick launch instead. ETA at the hangar in 7 mins” Leo replied, leaping out of bed, before striding purposefully towards the said hangar, with all possible haste. ------ Entering the hangar, already clad in his custom pilot suit, Leo's eyes were immediately drawn to the bay where his Unitas was customarily held at. What he saw, was a bipedal unit, with what appeared to be additional armor plating on it, along with a double barreled weapon on its right limb, a large cannon like weapon on the right shoulder, and a boxy container on the left. Squinting at the unit, Leo was quite unused to the aesthetic of this machina, having been used to the form of the Unitas. Floating his way over to the machina, in the reduced gravity of the hangar, Leo headed for the exposed cockpit hatch that some technician had opened up in advance for him. Doing a quick about face at the entrance of the cockpit, the well built merc drifted into his seat, where he began the power up process. The HUD, along with the various sub screens, leapt into life, where rows of green text scrolled rapidly across the screens. Sealing up his helmet, as the machina was cleared for launch by colony control, Leo was clenching the controls firmly, while the unit was being moved to the launch bay. When the linear catapult's electromagnetic systems held the unit in its grasp, the visored unit literally was shot out of launcher into the void of space. Using its powerful back mounted thrusters, the boxy Temjin a9H altered its initial launch vector to point itself towards the combat zone, while its sensors began scanning the area for hostiles, and the onboard weapons hot. Falling back right into the system, Falling back on all empty ears, We’re falling back right out of the system Means falling back right into disgrace.
The hangars were abuzz with all manner of activity, from the mechanics running about to keep each Machina in working order, to the military official who would come in to bark orders every few moments. Troubled times were upon them as an incessant plague of pirates sought to strike repeatedly despite getting repelled. If there was one thing that could be admired about them, it was their tenacity and determination to attack and take all they could despite the losses they suffered. Either someone was funding them quite well, or they were truly as numerous as the wretched pests that crawled upon the dark corners of any given area at any given time. A valiant effort had been made by the hired PMC groups in routing the pirates, but they were beginning to feel the wear and tear. Soldiers were growing increasingly tired, forcing sortie groups to alternate between resting and active pilots...
Among those currently on active duty was Souji Kobayashi, who spent his active duty time currently sitting atop a crate next to his Lancea, tuning out a better portion of the world around him in meditation. The unit was already at full capacity and ready to go, but with no alert to sortie, it wasn't worth incurring the fatigue so early before they attacked. For now he left the mechanics to their business, the true heroes that allowed them to go out onto the battlefield and fight the battles that saved others. If there was even the slightest screw-up, it could mean anywhere from as little to as one's own life to hundreds more. He rarely found himself interrupted during his acts of meditation, but today was a special day... Given how relentlessly the Pirates had been attacking, he was positive he would never be allowed to complete a full session, and it was an assumption that had been proven right throughout the day.
The Mukuru's earss flicked, catching the information that was being thrown through the hangar atmosphere, and several tidbits were caught by them: Pirates were incoming once more from a new area, and the lack of allied presence from both their own military and the PMC's meant a number of lives were in even greater danger than before. Eyes snapping open, Souji stepped off of the crate, turning to grab his helmet and slip it on. "Second Lieutenant Souji Kobayashi, reporting in. My Lancea is equipped and capable of intercepting if I sortie now. Requesting permission to deploy, ASAP."
"You're clear to engage, 2nd Lt. Kobayashi, but be warned you may or may not have immediate back-up! We're reading a large squadron of incoming, with estimates placing at around 18! However, holding off even just a few of them will help tremendously, just don't overexert yourself!" the feminine voice spoke through the comms device in his helmet. For the most part, Souji found himself smiling as he grasped the zipline, pulling himself to the open cockpit block and setting himself in.
"Don't worry, I have neither no desire to leave any pirates within the vicinity of our airspace, nor any intention of overexerting myself in the process." he smiled, giving a two-fingered waving salute to his comms officer, before he closed toe channel and began to start the Lancea up. As he did, new battle information was beginning to come in, stating a unit had launched ahead of all others to oppose the Pirates. Ah, the PMC's were ontop of their game as usual, and it seemed one was especially ready to tear into the opposition. Of course, when there was a good paycheck on the line, he found just about anyone would be willing to fight tooth and nail for it. Though battle for the money was never his intention, as long as it allowed him to continue living, he would find himself sortieing time and time again. He would have liked nothing better than to see this war end... Maybe then so many wouldn't have to lose their lives, be it for money, to prove a point, or simply just protecting what they loved. For now, the Lancea began to leave its space, maneuvering over to the wide berth that constituted the launch path for their units, before he closed the visor to his helmet.
"Second Lieutenant Souji Kobayashi, in Lancea! Mobilizing!" he called, before the linear catapult activated and accelerated the Lancea out of the hangar and toward the void. Out here, he could feel comfortable and free, let the mind wander and encompass the space around him. Were it not for the urgency of the situation, he felt as if he could stay here and stare at the stars for hours on end. Orienting himself, however, he pushed ahead on the throttles and activated the Lancea's High-Speed Booster equipment, accelerating after the allied unit that had launched ahead. So far that was at least two allied units accounted for... Would others be joining them, or would this be a two-man dance? He did not know, but no matter the case, they were there now. There was no return until all pirates were defeated...
Well, if this was going to work, it was high time to let the other pilot know they weren't alone. Bringing up the comms system, he attempted to message the unit further ahead.
"Attention, allied unit, this is Second Lieutenant Kobayashi speaking. I couldn't let you play the hero by yourself today, so i'm here to cut in and supply additional support. That won't be a problem, will it?" the Mukuru asked, the unit slowly attempting to catch up with the unknown machine that had launched ahead of all others.

When the Machina's sensors picked up another unit launching from the colony, the Temjin's onboard systems identified and tagged it as a friendly Union Lancea. Approaching from his rear with great speed, Leo hazarded a guess that its high speed booster was activated, for there was no other real explanation for its unusually high speed. Gradually catching up from his rear, the Lancea's pilot then identified himself as a Second Lieutenant Kobayashi, before rambling on about providing support. Given his recent disdain for the Union military, Leo brusquely responded with a “Whatever...”. The priority right now were the pirates, not the affiliation of the machina that was backing him up.
With the pirate unit coming into contact soon, Leo elected to deal with them preemptively at the longest possible range he could manage. The more units he dealt with at long range, the fewer units there were left to be taken care of in the long run. Bringing the a9 to a complete halt, the massive dual barrel weapon on its right limb was then raised and pointed towards the enemy formation in the distance. And moments later, when the targeting and tracking systems obtained a positive firing solution, a pair of large cerulean lances emitted from the tips of the dual blade like barrels, which flew into the distance.
The double beam attack scattered the enemy formation, like a block of birds, with the giant formation breaking off into smaller formations of three. However, the initial attack from the mercenary managed to reduce their numbers by three, whom were unable or just plain unlucky enough to be caught by the dual spears of destructive energy. Three down, that's...fifteen more to go..., Leo noted, as he got the Temjin a9 moving again. With the enemy formation broken up, it would make it slightly harder for the pirates to coordinate their actions. And he concluded that it would be to his advantage, if he could keep the pirates off balance enough for him to exploit their confusion.
Constantly vector moving, in between bursts of normal beam shots from the double plasma rifle, and the odd railgun shot, Leo managed to pirates off balance as intended. His Machina's heavy armor was working well so far, bearing up to the odd enemy weapon hit and no breaches so far, although in a few sections, the plating was getting a tad thin. In response, the mercenary pilot had damaged two addition pirate Machinas enough, for them to withdraw from this fight, which was relative good news. Although personally, he would have liked it more, were they disabled, so he could salvage them for his own purposes.

"Hmhm. Someone doesn't sound pleased to have me around... Nevertheless, i'll not get in your way." Souji smiled in response to the gruff answer, before his targetting systems activated. The mercenary had wasted no time in opening the assault once it got itself into position. A rather powerful high-output weapon was unleashed, two streams of destructive energy unleashed that made short work of at least three of the opposing machines, the remaining fifteen beginning to scatter and not cluster. "Hmm... If you have the power, I suppose it's only natural to use it." he hummed softly, accelerating past the mercenary unit. He picked out one of the pirates at the farthest distance, activating the Hyper Rail Blade.
"Now then... Shall we dance?" he asked the foes, four of the units now beginning to open fire on him. Three stolen and hastily-repaired Clypeus units and one Talum all fired in unison with their strongest rapid-fire weapons to keep up a point defense and attempt to deter the incoming machine. However, Souji dropped low, analyzing the points of origin for their firing lines before he brought the Hyper Rail Blade forward. The targetting reticule followed, targetting the arms of each unit as best as he could with their EMP Disruptors active. He hadn't been training long enough to be foiled by a system that worked better throwing off new pilots than veteran ones, and with that in mind, he began to pull the trigger. One shot... Two... Three... And finally four shots. Two of the Clypeus' lost their arms, the Wolverine Gatling Cannons they held now being rendered useless without a hand to pull the trigger with. The third Clypeus and the Talum escaped, however, disengaging their weapons as they realized the Union Machina was not going to be stopped by a hail of lead. Accelerating for one of the Clypeus, Souji hummed as the Lancea went into a barrel roll, drawing one of its PS Saber Mk2's with its free hand, passing the target reticule along its remaining arm and its lower torso.
"K-keep it away!" the pirate shouted, attempting to draw its Crushing Hammer to strike the Lancea, but it was too late. A cross-strike later, and the remaining arm along with both legs of the Clypeus were removed from the machine, the Lancea halting its advance a moment later, turning to catch the others preparing to aim and attack. He accelerated on the second damaged Clypeus, shouldering the Hyper Rail Blade as he attempted a cleaving strike, but targetting systems from above alerted him to the Talum firing an intercepting burst from its Predator Uzi, forcing him to disengage and instead resort to firing the shell from the weapon. A miss this time, as the Clypeus attempted to evade and lash out with its Crusher Hammer. Bringing the Hyper Rail Blade forward, he smashed through the Crusher Hammer, cleaving the projectile in two, before he brought the weapon back up and took aim at the head of the Clypeus. One shot, and the shell collided with the machine, tearing the head off and eliminating most of its ability to see. At this point, he was in the midst of the Pirates, and sending them into a panic was about the best response he could hope for in order to operate in tandem with the merc.
"Thirteen left with combat capability, fifteen alive total... But let's make it twelve with combat capability. Attack as you wish, mercenary." the Mokuru smiled, accelerating once more as the Talum and Clypeus began to focus their efforts on deterring him.
"It's been a while since I could have a little fun like this. Tell me, how is the life of a mercenary working out for you?" he inquired to his ally, cutting his forward momentum short and suddenly moving into a climb, maneuvering faster than the Pirates could content with. Making another course correction, the Lancea beelined for the undamaged Clypeus, who brought its Collum shield to bear as Souji swung the Hyper Rail Blade, deflecting the strike before the Clypeus followed with a kick, striking the Lancea in the chest and throwing it back. "Ooh, okay... So you guys still have some capability about you. I think i'll enjoy this a fair bit." Souji smiled, accelerating forward once again with the Hyper Rail Blade. He seemed to be going in for a slamming strike once again, to which the Clypeus prepared to catch and deflect the attack. However, as the last moment, he shifted the weapon to a new angle as the Clypeus thrust out with the shield expecting to catch the same strike. Instead the sword came up from below, carving upwards and tearing the shield-bearing limb straight off. Following up with the PS Saber Mk2, Souji drove the blade into the head of the Clypeus, tearing it off a moment later before kicking the machine away as the Talum fired its Uzi once more. The bullets came down, striking the Hyper Rail Blade and damaging the weapons blade rails, forcing him to discard it.
"Sad... I really liked that weapon." he frowned, but it at least left his hand free. As he had said before, there was now twelve units with full combat capability, fifteen alive total. Two without heads, and one unit with nothing but its head intact...

When the Union Lancea overtook his Temjin, Leo was surprised to see how skillful the second lieutenant was. In spite of being in a mass production unit, this Kobayashi fellow was flitting about like a hummingbird, and leaving quite the trail of damage in his wake. Grudgingly, the brawny merc had to admit that this particular Union pilot had some skill, seeing as how the Lancea was operated. Although it would appear that Kobayashi had gotten into a it of a pinch, by getting into a brief melee skirmish with one of the pirates. Still he came out on top of that fight, although the officer lost the use of one of his weapons in exchange.
Growing a tad annoyed that he was getting upstaged by Union Lancea, Leo elected to take some drastic measures. Splitting the twin plasma rifle into two separate weapons, the Temjin's targeting and tracking system began locking onto a selection of the pirate machinas closest to the a9H, while the shoulder mounted rail cannon and missile launcher were charged and prepped for firing. When a positive targeting solution was acquired, Leo went all wild with his weapons, firing each of them as soon as the weapon charge or missile lock was ready. The sudden short barrage of plasma and railgun bolts, as well as small missiles took its toll on the group of distracted pirate machinas.
As a result, another three machinas were damaged beyond recovery, exploding brilliantly in the void of space, leaving the remaining ten pirates and their patchwork machinas in various stages of damage.
Tch, Should have targeted a couple more......

Souji's warning sensors alerted him to the mercenary beginning a wide-area coverage attack, inputting the targetting solutions into his own unit quickly to see where the safe zones were, before he accelerated away from the Talum giving chase to him. The mercenarys attack had followed, space around them almost seeming to light up with energy and explosions all around, the Mokuru watching what could only be described as overkill when two Clypeus and another Talum were obliterated by the barrage. Out of twelve combat-capable units remaining before the barrage, only nine stood in opposition of the two of them now, several growing fearful of the A9H's power and began to close in on it. Two Clypeus, one with a Goliath Rail Bazooka, moved to attack, splitting up to give the machine a hard time. The bazooka was fired, three shells flying at the A9H, the other unleashing strafing fire with the Mini Gatling Cannons in its shoulders. A damaged Talum lied in wait, positioning itself toward the rear of the unit, beieving its attention would be on the other two long enough to let it take the kill shot.
"You aren't one to work halfway, are you? Still, I was under the assumption you wanted some of their machines mostly intact for your own financial and mechanical ends." Souji hummed in amusement, the Lancea returning to the battle at hand as the Talum closed in, Predator Uzi alight. The nimble Union machine barrel-rolled to avoid most of the gunfire, taking a few stray shots to its leg before it drew a second PS Saber Mk2, closing on the approaching unit and going for a heavy slam to its gun-using arm. However, the Talum whirled to the side of the strike, drawing a Hyper Vibration Saber with its free hand and taking a swing at the Lancea, who caught the blade with its PS Saber and pressed against it. "I do enjoy close combat, but it isn't something I like to indulge in too much, so i'm afraid i'm going to have you back off." the Mokuru smiled, bringing his second Saber alongside the first, the energy blades combining for a moment to strengthen the plasma blade. Triggering the High Speed Booster for a moment, the Lancea gained enough forward force to ruthlessly cleave through the Hyper Vibration Saber along with the arm that held it, before he disengaged the blades to spare the Talum's pilot from getting incinerated by the weapons. The Lancea hammered against the Talum, jolting its pilot out of a follow-up attack as Souji stored the PS Saber Mk2's.
"I'll take these. You won't be needing them." he grinned, one hand stealing the Zypher Pistol it carried, the other taking an extra magazine from under its Aerodynamic Shield, before he pulled back. Aiming the pistol forward, he squeezed off two shots into the Talum's head to destroy it, and one more into the joint of the remaining good arm on the Talum, leaving it incapable of resistance. "Eight combat capable... I must admit, I don't think i'm quite as efficient as you are, mercenary." he praised the pilot of the A9H, accelerating to engage one of the remaining Pirate units hovering toward the back. Among them looked to be two machines, seemingly more well-armed than the other Pirate units and outright different from most of the Union-stolen designs among them. A quick scan revealed a moment later, that they were NOT Union models, however. "Hm? MLR-NM01 Aquarius? Cross referencing... Oho, so they steal Ebonheart Empire designs too? They must hold them in higher regard if they didn't sortie too many of these." he mused, accelerating on one of the Acquarius units, who already had him in effective range of its Long Sight Sniper Rifle. One, then two shots fired, though neither connected as the Lancea suddenly dropped and began to take a longer way to get to the machine. A fast, unpredictably-moving target would prove harder to hit with a precision weapon.
"Either that, or they must not be that easy to steal." he added with a shrug, though he was aware of a new lock-on signature... Several, infact. The Aquarius armed the missile launchers on its backpack and fired. Two warheads flew at him... Before their outer coverings blasted off, each launching 15 micromissiles toward the Lancea for a total of 30, a smile drawing upon the Mokuru's face as the High Speed Boosters triggered. "Oho! You won't make this easy for me, will you? Very well then!" he pushed forward on the throttles, sending the Lancea blasting forward as the missiles gave chase.

In spite of the barrage he had executed earlier, it would seem to Leo that the pirates were now quite aware that they would be unable to best it, in ranged combat and elected instead to get up close and personal, to improve their odds of downing the visored Machina. Darting to his right, the mercenary managed to evade the trio of bazooka shells from one of the Clypeus, but the ballistic fire from the other impacted against the a9's heavy armor jacket, thinning its protection ever so slightly. Recalling that some of the Clypeus's attributes was its heavy armor and shield, and its EMP jammer, Leo figured it was for the best that he eliminated both of these as quickly as possible.
Boosting towards the unit which had fired its rail bazooka at him, the machina pilot activated the close combat function of his massive handheld weapons, resulting in a thick and intense blue plasma edge being generated along the length and tip of the long barrel. Even as the Clypeus raised its heavy shield to protect itself, the Temjim boosted upwards, rising slightly above the protective barrier before bringing both plasma edges down, cleaving off the arms at the shoulders. Not satisfied with just disarming the pirate machina, the left blade moved to cut off the head of the machina, while the right blade severed the Clypeus's legs at its knees. With its compatriot so ruthlessly disabled, the other Clypeus attempted to flee, firing its clavicle cannons in a move to cover it's movement.
It's retreat, however, was cut short with a high intensity plasma cannon shot from the right hand carried weapon, piercing through the hastily raised shield, and coring the machina. “That's one disabled and one more destroyed...”, Leo mumbled to himself. In the meantime, Kobayashi and his Lancea dealt with the pirate machina that was attempted to attack him from the rear. It was at that moment, that two new contenders entered the fray. With the battle computer tagging them as the new Aquarius Machinas from the Ebonheart Empire. Seeing them gang up on Kobayashi, Leo was half tempted to leave him be, but the Union soldier did help out after all. It would be bad form not to assist him.
Calculating the trajectory of the missile swarm chasing the Lancea[/], Leo triggered a long firing blast from his two plasma cannons, annihilating the homing projectiles. As the handheld weapons reverted back to their rifle modes, as a forced cooldown measure, the mercenary took the liberty of keeping the pressure of the military pilot, by firing of his rail cannon and a brief salvo of missiles.
“Better move out of the way, soldier boy...I can't promise how long I can keep them off you
