PERSONALITY
Evangeline, to sum her up, is determined to accomplish any task she is given. Whether it be something stupid or something really dangerous, Eva's the girl for the job. She will use everything in her power, resources, time, and energy to make sure that she lives up to her name and finishes the job. Of course, she's prideful and really cocky toward her accomplishments as well, and would, without qualms, show anyone why she's an ace pilot without much mercy. This singular minded style of thinking continues to get her through the most difficult of crisis but also gets her into more trouble than its worth often. And despite her best attributes as a pilot, Eva has a great trouble with authoritarian rules. She, honestly, tries her best to follow protocol, but she's simply to stubborn to do so. There are only a few people that she truly listens to and argues wholeheartedly with, particularly her sister and cousin. She won't hesitate to deviate from any plans if she can formulate her own, but she always makes sure that everyone is aware of her plans and can be talked down if needed (but it takes much persuasion to do so). She also likes to be in the spotlight and particularly showy moves that can often compromise her safety (but never the mission).
In what she calls her "other life", Evangeline is a typical 18 year old who enjoys fashion and photography. Although, she's rather rough and brash, due to her upbringing. Carrying the "shoot first, ask questions later" philosophy into her daily life, she does not hesitate to go head-first into any conversation and argument. She shows no restraint in expressing her opinions. However, she's also aware of her position, and would not try to pick a fight that she could not win. A learned tactician, she's learned to pick her battles. Yet, people's first impression of her isn't always correct. She's not unfriendly, and is in fact quite the opposite. She often goes out of her way to introduce herself to someone and will decide after a few conversations whether or not one is worthy of pursuing a friendship with or not. Of course, she's used to "friends" leaving her because they're unable to handle her brutal honesty but Evangeline is truly loyal to those who stick with her through thick and thin. She hopes now that she'll get along fine with her new teammates, knowing that it will be all for the best.
Evangeline does not care much on how others see her (as long as it's with the acceptable constraints of how she wants them to think). If people cannot accept her for who she is, then she's simply better off without them in her life. Unless one is a close friend, she won't care about the names you call her. She does, however, take heavy offense to any insults directed to those who have earned her respect and trust. Evangeline is loyal to a point where it can become annoying to whoever she follows. She is overly protective, almost always wanting to know what people are doing or how they are progressing in their life. Despite that, Eva is definitely a woman one could talk to about problems and receive an objective advice from. She is reliable in the ways that matter.
Ambitions:
- To accomplish something great enough that she could present to her sister and reconnect with the family
- To help her cousin establish his mercenaries' dominance (through piloting, engineering and whatever means she can offer)
- To create a "beast of a mobile suit"
HISTORY
Evangeline Magnus would like everyone to think that she is an average woman when, really, she is anything but.
From birth, Eva had been extraordinary. She was born out of science, not nature. Hailing from a family of old aristocracy, the Magnus family head felt the need to have an impactful heir in order to reaffirm the family status. Commissioned by business magnate James Magnus, Evangeline was the second product of genetic manipulation within the family, a test tube baby - the first being her elder sister. In fact, she was the by-product of her father's human genes crossed with an Eden researcher from the company (with consent, of course). The unwed man wanted a perfect heir, resulting in her physically appealing appearance and sharp mind. Even as a child, she had attracted the attention of various adults - both by her charm and restraint. She is, of course, anything but perfect. Evangeline, for all her looks and brains, has quite a difficult time dealing with anything to do with being empathetic. Born and raised to privilege, there was barely any opportunity for her to exercise that particular trait.
Because she was of the fairer sex, she was protected from most things and left in the dark. Most people around her adhered to that unspoken house law – except her sister. Her elder by five years, Angelica was a great influence on the young Evangeline. As the eldest of the Magnus children, Angelica had greater responsibilities. Growing up without a mother, Eva was forced to rely on her sister. And the elder sister made sure that Evangeline was aware of most of the responsibilities to the family, to dispel the younger sister's naive vision of their family. And so, Eva learned about their family's shadier dealings (as an weapons producer among other things) and learned how to deal with it, if only in discussions with Angelica. By the time Angelica was nineteen, she had already managed to graduate from the state university, worm her way into politics, and made a name not only for herself but for the family. And Evangeline was expected to accomplish just as much. As much as she hates being compared to someone, she can only accept this because it is Angelica's shadow. By the time she graduated university at eighteen, Angelica was already moved out of her family home to be married to the young heiress of the Crownguard Corporation– a controversial matter on its own but Angelica was powerful enough to do as she pleases.
And it was her sister's explanation about her same-sex marriage that stuck to Evangeline's mind.
"We'll make sure father needs no sons."
And it was that mantra that made Evangeline's decision for her. Although she had a degree in astromechanical engineering at age eighteen, with which she had hoped to expand her family's business, Eva re-enrolled into the military Academy – much to the surprise of her father. Logically speaking, it was one of the best options she could undertake in expanding her family's renown. After all, Angelica already had a firm grasp in the business and politics sector, owning majority shares in several companies and already in a bid for election as District Councillor at age twenty-three. Really, Evangeline thought that her older sister was simply overachieving but at least her sister left some goals for her to accomplish. Her years in the Academy were expedited into two. A combination of her wealth and talent allowed for exception – but not without spite.
Her experience through the Academy was not without incident. There were many who frowned upon her for many things, both trivial and serious: her associations with the Magnus household, her youth and gender, her apparent naivete (but it was all just an act really), her talent both by hand and technology and (silliest of all) for being too pretty to be a soldier, usually followed by preposterous ideas of simply just marrying whoever suggested it. For Evangeline, empathy was not her trademark trait and she had no problem appearing as the cold-hearted bitch who could bite as hard as she barks. Consistently ranking at the top of her class, she was officially enlisted as a test pilot for experimental mobile suit. Though not entirely satisfied with such a posting, Eva deduced that it was probably wiser to climb through the ranks under her own effort – if only to calm the dissenters.
Upon graduating, she was immediately enlisted into the Mobile Suit Corp.'s Special Forces - lending to her specialty in ranged weaponry (she's a pretty good shot) and driving massive mobile weapons (though she has suspicion that her sister may have given her a leg up, much to her dismay). Though it may seem like she was on track to a great career, all seemed lost when she was dismissed from the military (mostly cited for excessive insubordination). Downtrodden and ashamed that such a thing could even happen, Evangeline packed up and ran away from home as soon as she could - unable to face her father and sister for whenever they would find out. She found refuge in her cousin, Leo Kent, who enabled her to hide from her family... at least for a while. It didn't take long for her sister to find a way to contact her (Eva suspected and was proved right when she thought her father had placed responsibility on bringing her back to Angelica). Evangeline, however, has ignored all attempts of reconnecting, still ashamed of what happened.
One of the things that held her sanity during her Academy years then was her relationship with the Brownings. Clarity Browning was one of the technicians assigned to their class and one the Evangeline had gotten particularly close to. She had practically been adopted into the elder woman's family, and had offered motherly advice to the young Magnus whenever she was in trouble. For the two years she was in the Academy, Evangeline went home to the Brownings. Her father had disapproved of the relationship once he had found out, considering that the family had only been middle class at the time. This was perhaps the first time that Evangeline outright disregarded her father's opinion, valuing her adoptive mother far too much. She had kept very close contact with the Brownings after graduation but disappeared from their lives as well after her dismissal from the military.
Her cousin, knowing her own skills, offered her a place in his mercenary unit. Having nothing better to do (and still wanting to pilot), Evangeline offered her piloting skills as well as her engineering talents to further the cause (not that she necessarily believes in it, but it was something to do). She's taken on the name of Juliet Montague for whenever she was on missions - and in the past year that she's been with her new crew, she's come to realize that she's one of the only ones who could go on "espionage" missions.
"We'll make sure father needs no sons."
Evangeline's mantra echoed through her decisions. But as she slowly matured, she's realized that there was no way she could follow in her elder sister's footsteps - not in family honour and certainly not in other aspects. And if only he would stop smiling and grinning at her without a care in the world, she might have been able to keep in line.
